New Year Goals: Make Nine 2019

Looking back at 2018, I didn’t get as many of my sewing goals accomplished as I would have liked. With a growing business, a never ending to-do list and trying to find time for all my other hobbies (gardening, cooking, reading, etc), I didn’t have as much time to sew. Here are a few highlights that I did get accomplished from last year’s Make Nine.

  1. Deer & Doe Patterns Luzerne Trench
  2. Noodlehead Range Backpack
  3. Closet Case Patterns Ginger Jeans

Part of my resolutions for 2019 is to make time to sew and create what I want. While I normally only sew for myself, there is usually another obligation tied each project—a sample for Sew Expo, a Style Tour or some sort of blog post. This year I want to make time for more projects with no strings attached! Maybe I’ll even get to sew up some of the treasures hidden away in my personal stash!

I thinking about my “Make Nine” for this year, I picked nine patterns that both fill a need in my closet or have been on my make wish list. All will be great additions to my handmade wardrobe. Let’s dive in!

Make Nine 2019 | Style Maker Fabrics

No. 1 | Hey June Handmade Brunswick Pullover—Since its release around Thanksgiving, I have been able to stop thinking about this pullover pattern from Hey June. Totally my style, this is the perfect addition to my handmade wardrobe. Warm and cozy and full of lovely details, I can’t wait to sew this one up. (Pattern | Fabric)

No. 2 | Sew House Seven Tabor V-Neck—One of our top selling patterns from 2018, I can see why everyone loves it! My only debate is which fabric to use—sweater knit, French terry, or something else. Maybe one of each! (Pattern | Fabric)

No. 3 | Alina Design Co. Fulton Sweater Blazer— Alina hit it out of the park with this pattern! Since it’s release I have seen so many amazing versions, I can’t wait to try it for myself! With so many ways to wear and style it, it is sure to be a favorite in my closet. (Pattern | Fabric)

No. 4 | Sophie Hines Arccos Undies—Much like my pajamas, my underwear drawer could definitely use some replenishment. I also have quite the stash of knit scraps, so my goal is to solve both problems and sew up some new undies. I want to try a few different patterns and find the perfect one, but I’m thinking the Arccos look like a great starting point. (Pattern | Fabric)

No. 5 | Closet Case Patterns Carolyn Pajamas—I never got another pair of my favorite pajamas made last year, so I am adding them to my Make Nine again this year. My original pair have seen better days, so this is definitely more of a need at this point. I’m thinking it’s time for some batch sewing! (Pattern | Fabric)

No. 6 Helen’s Closet Suki Kimono—I have been dreaming about the perfect robe to curl up in on lazy weekend mornings. Helen’s Suki Kimono is currently my pattern of choice, but there are so many great options. Any recommendations? (Pattern | Fabric)

No. 7 | Papercut Patterns Palisade Pants—I added this Papercut pattern as sort of a step out of my comfort zone. These pants aren’t a style I would normally wear, but with the right fabric choice I think they could be a great addition to my wardrobe. And those pockets are amazing! (Pattern | Fabric)

No. 8 | Victory Patterns Ulysses Trench—I have wanted a great drapey trench coat for those damp northwest days for a while now. I was kind of waiting for the perfect pattern and then Victory released the Ulysses. Problem solved! I think this will be a great project for this spring. (Pattern | Fabric)

No. 9 | Deer & Doe Patterns Opium Coat—This is probably my most selfish choice on this year’s Make Nine. No, I don’t really need another winter coat… but this one is just some amazing I can’t help but want to sew it up. Like right now! (Pattern | Fabric)

While that rounds out my official “Make Nine”, I did want to include a couple other projects on my make list for 2019. Besides machine sewing, I really enjoy handwork like appliqué, stitchery and knitting. I am a huge Sue Spargo fan and have taken a few of her classes, but I haven’t’ made my wool appliqué and stitchery projects a priority. My goal is to change that this year! My saved posts on Instagram also say I need to fit in some knitting projects (Carina Spencer, Joji Knits)

So many amazing things to create, so little time! How do you prioritize and manage all of your hobbies? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

  1. Hi Michelle,

So glad to have come across your blush g via instagram. I have been wanting to sew more clothes for myself that fit me perfectly. Finding this site is a amazing, finding quality fabric that was available 30- 40 years is so difficult.
Thanks for putting your shop together I hope to regularly purchase from you.
    Best to you,

  2. Well Michelle: I love your selection! This blog is very inspiring 🙂 The Alina notched sweater blazer and Papercut palisade pants are very tempting…

Thought you should know that, because of Stylemaker fabrics, in 2018 I discovered new fabrics: double gauze (Kokka grey triangles in StyleArc Fern and Black cranes in StyleArc harmony), ponte (Simplicity 10001 dress) and rayon twill (black with magenta floral in V8945).

For 2019, I have stashed more SM fabrics for my #makenine: double gauze and rayon for StyleArc tops with coordinating slub linen (new fabric for me) for culottes by Itch2Stitch and True Bias, plus stretch lace for Rad undies. Also eyeing the boiled wool for a downunder winter jacket 🙂
