Swimwear Sewing Inspiration – 2024

Summer will be here before we know it! To celebrate the arrival of warmer weather and vacation season, we are celebrating with a three amazing swimwear collaborations. These incredible ladies truly knocked these me-mades out of the park (or maybe it’s out of the pool?!), and we are so excited to share them with all of you!

Matching Swim Separates with Alex (@amassonlifestyle)

Alex was immediately drawn to this striking geometric swim print and we love the simple rouched details on her two-piece suit. She paired it with a solid double gauze wrap beautifully complements the bold colorful shapes in the print.

When we asked her for any advice about sewing swimwear Alex said, “Don’t be afraid to sew swimwear! It does take a little patience. Pick a simple pattern and read the instructions before you begin.” She also mentioned to be sure to take advantage of online sew-alongs if you ever get stuck or need some help. P.S. Don’t forget to use a stretch sewing needle!

Fabrics: Large Scale Geometric Swimwear Knit and Cotton Double Gauze

Patterns: Greenstyle’s Hana Swim Top and Butterick’s B4526 (swim bottoms + wrap)

Summer Classics with Nicole (@nf_merrits)

A master at sewing swimwear, we are thrilled to have Nicole join us with her own take on summer! As a busy mom, she finds a pair of comfy short is the perfect thing to pull-on over her suit for a trip to the pool. Isn’t this colorful combo fun?!

Her best advice when sewing swimwear—the goal isn’t perfection! Nicole says, “Despite sewing so many suits, I still sometimes have slight imperfections in my handmade suits. Instead of a ‘perfect’ fit, I instead work for a ‘better than ready to wear’ fit, which has helped me embrace the imperfections and feel confident in my handmade suits.” Sound advice for all of our me-made garments!

Fabrics: Garden Floral Swimwear Knit and Soft Washed Linen

Patterns: Petite Stitchery’s Darby One-Piece Swimsuit and True Bias’s Dani Short

Sheer Perfection with Jenna (@theladywholunches)

How cute is Jenna?! We are digging this combination of bold colors and textures. The playful check pairs beautifully with the slightly sheer clip dot for her playful yet feminine swim look. And don’t get us started on using her daughter’s kiddie pool for her photo backdrop! Love, love, love!

When sewing swimwear, Jenna’s best advice is to take your measurements both standing and sitting before you select your size. She also agrees with Alex (Stretch needles are a must!) and Nicole (“Even if your stitches aren’t perfect, you won’t notice once it’s on and in the water!).

Fabrics: Basketweave Plaid Swimwear Knit and Tonal Swiss Clip Dot

Patterns: Megan Nielsen’s Cottesloe Swimsuit and In the Folds’s Gibson Loungewear Top

Join us in thanking these incredible sewists for their creativity and advice! Hopefully their outstanding swim looks help inspire your own swimwear sewing projects. And if you haven’t tackled swimsuit sewing yet, maybe this is just the motivation you needed!
